Abstract
  • Diverse, divided and declining define many of our congregations. As an area minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), I have encountered among our congregational leadership a sense of mourning over what once was, a paralysis regarding change of current realities, and a loss of hopefulness for the future. Pastoral care theologian Andrew D. Lester would identify this congregational crisis as a breakdown in our 'future stories.' Through interviews with congregational leadership, eight obstacles are named that cause churches to stumble. A study guide for congregational leadership, incorporating these obstacles, is embodied in the project
