Abstract
  • This work is a study focused on the life and theology of Jonathan Edwards. The thesis is introduced by examining the theological meaning and importance of the doctrines of justification and sanctification as pillar doctrines undergirding any true model of Christian spirituality. A brief history of the theological development of these doctrines is provided, as well as the views that Edwards held on these matters. The first chapter then proceeds to examine Edwards as a man. A brief biographical sketch is provided, followed by an exploration of Edwards as a pastor-theologian. The work then seeks to assess the influence of Edwards upon his contemporaries and the contemporary church. The second chapter looks at Edwards' theology of God's glory as seen in his Dissertation concerning the end for which God created the world. Chapter Three investigates Edwards' theology of Christian spirituality as seen in his Treatise concerning religious affections. The transition is then made to the practical ramifications of the truths of Edwards' theology by the development of an Edwardsean model of Christian spirituality. The thesis concludes by seeking to provide a possible model for implementation of an Edwardsean model of Christian spirituality in the life of a believer and his/her family.
