  • Alcoholism is a wholistic disease which afflicts the body, mind, and spirit. Church judicatory personnel too frequently respond as if alcoholism is a matter of will and moral weakness. This posture impedes recovery and contributes to the downward spiral of the clergy alcoholic and his or her family. The project offers a model for ministry which helps church judicatory personnel and local church clergy persons become actively involved in the recovery of clergy alcoholics. The model incorporates four specific issues related to recovery: identification, intervention, treatment, and co-dependency. The pervasive nature of the disease includes the co-dependency of the alcoholic's entire family. This document contributes a consultation which is designed to enlighten judicatory personnel and other clergy who are concerned both with the recovery of clergy alcoholic and with his or her return to effective ministry.
