Abstract
  • Through a unique method of utilizing a specially designed spiritual assessment process, this dissertation describes a project that demonstrates that attention to the spiritual dimension of humanity is an essential factor in providing high-quality, effective health care. Spiritual assessment occurred while providing pastoral care through emotional support and active listening. Considered along with the medical and psychological assessments, a holistic understanding and treatment of the patient was achieved. A greater sense of healing, harmony of body, mind and spirit was achieved. Positive existential meaning and dignity were evident and experienced by patients, families and even the members of the health care team.
