- Abstract
- This project assesses the theological, ecclesiological and sociological rationale for the current emphasis on the permanent diaconte. Using the perspective of the ministry studies of the United Methodist Church, the author analyzes pertinent data from scripture, church history and ecumenical agreements as well as social factors of time periods when the various forms of the diaconate (deacon, monastic orders, deaconess, diaconal minister) were strong, and concludes that the office of deacon is important as a representative ministry and embodiment of Christ's call to serve. An assessment instrument that can be used to evaluate ministry studies is attached.
