Abstract
  • This study is an effort to explore the use of story inpp_eaching by examining theological dimensions in five novels of John Updike. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated. The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent. The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task. The study concludes that the church's scriptures provide the foundation for preaching and that story is a rich resource to relate to the life situation of hearers of preaching.
