Abstract
  • This dissertation demonstrates to Protestants that engaging in spiritual direction is an appropriately Christian and Protestant practice. The author initially supports the practice's legitimacy by describing spiritual direction and offering an historical review of its evolution since the fourth century. The connection between Scripture and spiritual direction is explored to further encourage Protestants to practice spiritual direction. A theological perspective of spiritual direction is proposed, specifically regarding the doctrines of God, revelation, and the Holy Spirit. The last chapter discusses spiritual direction's relationship with evangelicals, gen-Xers, and pastors. It also offers a model of group spiritual direction for Protestants.
