Abstract
  • The purpose of this thesis is to explore how using multimedia in preaching can affect the preacher. For the purposes of this paper, the use of multimedia is defined as: the use of projected images and video of popular films. The conviction of this thesis - that multimedia can have an overall positive effect on the preacher as well as the listeners of a sermon - is based on personal preaching experience, class work and reflection during a three year preaching project. The thesis explores and reflects on field experience as well as dialogue with several writers, including Richard Jensen and Thomas Troeger. The thesis builds on the work of Paul Tillich who identifies the human condition in terms of estrangement. This thesis suggests that use of multimedia can only illuminate the human condition, not provide the cure. However, due to changes in culture, multimedia may uniquely serve as a more effective tool for communicating the Gospel message, which indeed is the answer to estrangement. Included in the thesis are summary multimedia rules, which are the result of my preaching experience and study. These rules are intended to offer general findings that may be useful to other preachers.
