Abstract
  • This is a study of the effects of preaching on the culture of a congregation experiencing racial change. It is a review of sermons over a twenty-year period while the congregation was involved in a transition from a white ethnic German congregation to a church with 82 percent African American membership. The focus of the study is how the sermons of the pastor helped create the culture, or climate, of a congregation that went from active opposition to the change in its neighborhood to one which welcomed African Americans who were moving into the neighborhood.
