Abstract
  • Since China opened up to the West in the 1980's, the Catholic Church in China has started to accomplish God's mission and practice discipleship openly. Many people have been seeking the Christian faith after obtaining religious freedom. In today's China, thousands of people receive baptism without proper instruction about Church teaching and practice. As a result, only a small number remain faithful to their baptismal commitment. In considering today's new situation, I conducted interviews with catechists who have had experience working on this program in the diocese. I think the Catholic Church in China faces two critical issues: 1) inadequate preparation for those who wish to be baptized, and 2) inadequate ongoing faith formation and communal support for those who have been baptized... By creating their own small base communiites, the Chinese Church can fully implement the RCIA process for new Catholics and ovrcome the past inadequacy of faith formation in those who are already baptized.
