  • This paper discusses, from the point of view of Christian theology, the question of the possibility of a mutually enriching dialog between Christian theology and contemporary American literature and the question if such a dialog can be an authentic contribution to urban ministry. The author deals with the following issues: (1) The legitimacy of such dialog in the context of urban ministry, (2) the theological conception underlying such dialog (Paul Tillich's 'method of correlation,' and Douglas John Hall's conception of a contextualized theology), and (3) examples of such dialog that begins with novels of Philip Roth, Paul Auster, and John Updike. The author describes the reactions of a study group to whom he presented his ideas and whose participants consisted of active church members and church leaders (The Montreat study group). He also describes and analyzes the responses of ten secular persons--Germans and Americans--whom he asked to fill out a questionnaire (The Questionnaire). Finally, the author develops guidelines for a dialog-oriented, contextualized urban ministry.
