Abstract
  • Eight frank and open discussion sessions involving presbyters and permanent deacons comprised the key to this project. Discussions of hopes, fears, problems and reservations were analyzed and compared with Vatican II and post-conciliar theologies of the diaconate, presbyterate and church order. The resulting theology involves the complementarity of roles of laity, diaconate, presbyterate and episcopacy in pursuing the mission of the church. Priests will only accept the diaconate when they understand why it was restored. Understanding--and definition--can be achieved through massive catechesis. This project offers one approach to such catechesis in which deacons would furnish important elements.
