Abstrakt

This study explored the current youth crisis and ways to bridge the chasm between churched and unchurhced African-American adolescents (ages 9-18) living in the South Broadway community of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The purpose of this quantitative and qualitative research project was to determine those factors which contributed to this chasm between youth and church and make recommendations to address the problem. Based on survey returns, barriers to youth participation were identified. The study made several recommendations: (1) involvement of youth in all areas of the church service, (2) education of youth in the areas of self-esteem and ethnic-cultural heritage, (3) relevant Bible study, (4) establishment of church youth councils, (5) inclusion of youth representatives on church boards and agencies, (6) regular conversation between church leaders and youth on contemporary issues related to adolescents, (7) establishment of regular weekly youth fellowship groups, and (8) establishment of spiritual mentoring programs linking youth and adults.
