Abstract
  • This study drew upon Aristotle's three persuasive proofs -ethos, the audience's understanding of the speaker's character, pathos, the power of emotional appeal to reach and move the audience; and logos, the power of argument - exploring their applicability to modern preaching. Its purpose was to qualitatively explore, using surveys, focus group and sermon analysis, the place of each of the proofs in informing the communicative bridge building of sermons among evangelical English-speaking pastors and missionaries in Peru. Findings focused upon the importance of the persuasive content, context and presence in preaching, while remembering the power belongs to God alone.
