Abstract
  • Many university churches experienced their 'heyday' in the 1950s. Since then, changes in society, religion and the university itself have created a far different cultural setting for university congregations. Through a survey of American Baptist university churches and case studies of two congregations, mission and identity in the university church are explored. Churches studied exhibited a strong sense of identity, strong connections with the community, strong connections between faith and learning, 'spiritual balance,' and were reappropriating the church's tradition for the present day. The project includes reflections on five stances that churches may take toward the university.
