Abstract
  • This study seeks to understand what makes preaching persuasive as it examines evidence of the types of preaching appeals made in Southeast Alabama Presbytery in the greater Montgomery, AL area. Those who participated affirmed the importance of preaching in the churches studied. Areas of special consideration include the place of rhetorical principles in preaching, and the use of traditional evangelical invitations at the end of sermons. The study examines Christ's place in preaching persuasively, and the need for preparation for listening to sermons on the part of the laity. The study suggests ways to improve the persuasive force of preaching.
