Abstract
  • During recent decades differing attitudes toward hospital chaplaincy ministry have developed among providers and users of medical services and within denominations to which individual chaplains belong. This project provides an overview of hospital chaplaincy and studies its pastoral care role. It examines specifics of varying hospital organizations, the chaplain's work and qualifications and the diversity of patients and illnesses encountered. It considers the training and pastoral role of clergy and laity in various facets of hospital ministry. The project concludes that effective hospital chaplaincy service is an essential Christian ministry. Also, it discusses the roles of trained volunteers in supplementing such ministry.
