Abstract
  • The project reviews scripture and early church history to understand the concept of the diaconate and the reasons why renewal is a permanent part of ordained ministry in the Roman Catholic and Anglican communions. The project also considers the transitional diaconate (for those to be ordained to the presbyterate). It explores the current expression of the permanent diaconate and questions raised within each communion. The author concludes that the permanent diaconate as an ordained office of ministry should be discontinued and that the transitional diaconate should be retained as an ordained office, but should be revised to respond to the servant mission of the church. Five recommendations are offered.
