  • This thesis uses four surveys, a review of literature and observations of an experimental sharing group in its methodological approach. The author bases conclusions upon the research data: 1) Lay persons (untrained in psychology, psychiatry, or social work) from Lutheran churches in New Jersey which sponsor counseling centers have virtually nothing to do with the ministry of pastoral counseling unless they are clients; 2) The current trends of pastoral counseling hardly promote shared ministry concepts, but if anything, actually widen the gap between laity and clergy in their common ministry; 3) The current trends in pastoral counseling promote a medieval model of ministry which is authoritarian and hierarchical in viewing the roles of pastor and people; 4) Intensive sharing groups involving lay persons from church and community, clients and non-clients of a church-sponsored counseling center, and a pastoral counselor are a viable and valid way of utilizing lay persons in the ministry of pastoral counseling.
