Abstrait

This paper shares the minister/counselor's experience in work with couples preparing for marriage. The author indicates important issues in premarital counseling. Experience with divorced persons who choose to remarry aids him in understanding the signposts and cautions, the strengths and limitations of a marriage relationship. Insight into the struggles and pains of first marriages, and willingness to share how that experience informs their second marriage is an important resource for identifying key issues in the development of healthy or unhealthy relationships. Significant personal and interpersonal issues in growing with another person in a marriage relationship are dependence, independence and interdependence. This three part framework illustrates the importance of looking at the needs, wants and expectations that one brings into a relationship.
