  • The focus of this project is to examine how an experimental congregation, an interfaith chavurah of Jewish and Christian couples, established and attained goals in the first year of its existence. The methodology consists of five parts: the description of Jewish-Christian intermarriage in the United States; a discussion of the chavurah movement in the contemporary Jewish scene; a history of the founding of the Interfaith Chavurah for Liberal Judaism in Greater Hartford; the synthesis of a goal attainment model based on the works of Donald Metz and Talcott Parsons; and, the account of the ICLJ's first year and analysis of its achievements. Although the ICLJ was founded as a conventional congregation, its identity sometimes became ambivalent and bordered on an informal support group. Furthermore, due to inconsistent and ambiguous styles in processing organizational tasks, goal attainment suffered and many group expectations were not achieved.
