Abstract
  • One of the challenges facing the church in the twenty-first century is how to offer pastoral care to immigrants, who present the church with many different types of needs. This research project proposes a way of understanding the needs of immigrants, especially those who are first-generation Hispanic. A theology of pastoral care as described in the experience of the Israelites in Exodus and in their exile experience in Babylon is used as a departure point and reference for a caring response to the needs of immigrants. Personal histories are included to give voice to the multiple and complex challenges facing immigrants. A pastoral theology of 'acompañamiento' that offers care and guidance as a way to meet immigrants' basic needs is suggested.
