- Abstract
- This dissertation-project sought the theological elements which might be used as a foundation for a theology of volunteerism. After a review of biblical, theological, and psychological literature, the lay board members of six selected churches were surveyed for demographic information, opinions regarding volunteerism, and theological beliefs. The pastors of those six churches were personally interviewed regarding the same items. The results show that the key elements in a theology of volunteerism are: 1. the church as God's witness; 2. the purpose of the church in expounding the teachings of Jesus; 3. the Bible as an authoritative guidebook for individual conduct which should not always be interpreted literally; 4. the nature of the laity's ministry; and 5. a concept of Christian stewardship.
