Abstract
  • The study explores the relationship between church leaders' beliefs about stewardship and a specific aspect of stewardship behaviors (giving to causes beyond the local congregation). Interviews, observation and a questionnaire were used to collect data from forty lay and clergy church leaders. The paper includes sections on biblical and theological bases for stewardship, imperatives for stewardship and justice, motivation for giving, research methodology and data analysis. Conclusions indicate: 1. church leaders surveyed lack clarity and tend to be polarized regarding vital stewardship issues; and 2. that church leaders well-grounded in biblical-theological-psychological understandings of stewardship is vital for an effective and creative church.
