Abstrakt

This thesis addresses the necessity to implement an ongoing continuing education program in homiletics for Roman Catholic deacons. This project identifies the theology and frequency of diaconate preaching and explains the importance of deacons to be able to effectively communicate God's message. The following work provides a five week seminar that has been taught to a group of deacons from the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York. The seminar helped the participants to recognize, understand and apply specific skills in which to enhance their preaching. The syllabus includes information on exegesis, listening, biblical concepts, relevance, application, verbal and nonverbal communication, connecting to an audience, and preaching without the use of notes.
