Abstract
  • Although the literature suggests that taking sabbatical leave is important in enabling ministers to engage in long and sustained ministries, only a minority of ministers in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland actually take a sabbatical. A qualitative study was carried out to explore the factors which encourage ministers to take sabbatical leave. This study suggests that the denomination needs to work at explaining the need for and benefits of sabbatical leave and to be more proactive in encouraging ministers. Style of ministry was identified as being an important factor in deciding whether or not a minister took a sabbatical.
