- Abstract
- This thesis was written to help the average pastor learn a disciplined approach to exegesis and hermeneutics that can be used as part of sermon preparation. Methodical bible study focuses primarily on the English text, and in this study system, one learns how to observe, interpret, and apply the Bible to one's life and congregation. In the first step of observation, the pastor must slow down to really see what is in the text. He is trying to answer the question: what does the text say? Then comes the second step of interpretation. Now the preacher must use what has been observed in the text and begin to discover how it relates to life. He is trying to answer the question: what does the text mean? The third and final step is application. Here the preacher studies the information he has learned in the first two steps and must answer the question: how does this apply to the lives of the preacher and the congregation? The preacher then uses this information from methodical bible study and integrates it as part of sermon preparation. Developing bible study skills will ultimately help us to become more effective in proclaiming God's Word.
