Abstract

This project/thesis concerning the history of biblical interpretation is designed as a thirteen-week study for an adult church school or short term class. The paper notes how the issues of interpretation often recur, although the cultural context, and even the conception of the authority and inspiration of scripture may change. One such issue is the value given to the historical context of the original writing or speaking of a given text. The paper provides an overview of recurring issues in the history of interpretation and methods that various techniques of interpretation answer them. Lay awareness of the complex nature of interpretation increased, and a basis to critically evaluate the use of biblical material by contemporary interpreters was provided.
