Abstract
  • This project proposes that story is the common element that underlies formation of a people's identity and its preservation through collective memory. Contemporary Christian loss of mythic, metaphorical thought patterns in favor of literal, rationalistic ways of thinking threatens the survival of the people of God and divests the Scriptures of their power to transform. The project uses secular story and biblical story in a 'sandwich' technique borrowed from the Gospel of Mark in order to restore an imaginative, metaphorical perspective to Christian consciousness so that biblical narrative can be reclaimed as story. This method of sacred storytelling promotes imaginative reflection on the biblical text that results in spiritual growth.
