Abstract
  • The purpose of this study was to explore how a systematic understanding of the marriage covenant can provide both the foundation and direction for a pastor's work with couples who are preparing for marriage. This work explores how systems theory can be employed by the pastor to help the couple understand the covenants in which they were nurtured and still participate. The pastoral or hermeneutic circle was used as the author's methodology. This begins in pastor's experience of preparing couples for marriage. The next element in this process was social analysis in which the author explored those elements of family systems theory and technique which were useful to the marriage preparation. Then, the author engaged in theological reflection using the biblical concept of covenant as how notion of covenant can be beneficial for defining and interpreting contemporary Christian marriage. Lastly, a model of marriage preparation using family systems theory as well as the idea of covenant from a systems perspective is illustrated. A framework was offered along with tools and techniques for actual sessions with couples.
