Abstract
  • Spiritual direction is not an activity which is confined to a one-to-one relationship. Effective spiritual direction can be done in the local church through the sermon. Preaching as spiritual direction differs significantly from preaching as pastoral care. The author presents research leading to a definition of preaching as spiritual direction. In addition, the author presents a pragmatic application of the theory to crafting sermons which have spiritual direction as the principal aim. Included in this paper are five sermons which serve as examples of various methods for preaching as spiritual direction.
