- Abstract
- This study sought to determine whether coaching is a viable means to improve the biblical preaching abilities of licensed local pastors and lay speakers. With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. The results indicate coaching to be a valuable tool to improve the art of preaching among this group of practitioners.
