Abstract
  • This dissertation uses a heuristic reflection method to explore a relationship with the Divine and with the Virgin Mary. Iconography was the spiritual discipline used for this exploration. The author, an ordained Protestant woman, used three icons of the Virgin Mary to help discover whether Mary could be a gateway to the feminine aspect of God. By using iconography, journaling and scriptural reflection facets of a 'softer' God did appear. However, the personality of Mary herself became the dominant feature, re-affirming, for the author, Mary's importance and raising questions about how this importance can be reclaimed by the Protestant Church.
