Abstract
  • Six churches in communities in socioeconomic and/or racial transition in East Ohio United Methodist Conference were studied for guidelines for pastors and their churches as they seek to reach out to residents of their changing communities. The pastors' leadership qualities that were most transformative of their congregation were (1) seeking to empower and equip laity for ministry; (2) having vision and helping congregations anticipate a better, more inclusive future; (3) being assertive enough to challenge members to take responsibility for mission; and (4) being somewhat flexible, thereby encouraging members to be more flexible and open to change.
