Abstract
  • The author investigates the possibility of using functional substitutes to help Dyak converts overcome a felt need for rituals at certain stages in the rice-cycle year. He concludes that functional substitutes are biblical and should be used to help the converts avoid syncretism. The author did primary research into the beliefs and practices of the Dyaks in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. He developed a manual of functional substitutes for use by rice farmers. The manual contains sample services to replace the rituals used by animistic Dyaks.
