Abstract
  • This dissertation argues that pastors face the unprecedented challenge of mass addiction, requiring a shift in pastoral ministry. The author first clarifies what addiction is, explores why it is intensifying, and explains how this intensification affects pastoral work. In the second chapter, relevant literature is examined from the twelve-step movement, the helping professions and pastoral writers -- locating a core of tested wisdom pastors can utilize. The author concludes the work by showing how pastors, through adjusting their unspoken signals, spoken messages, and leadership choices, collapse addictive systems and birth a grace-giving, soul-freeing church culture in their place.
