Abstract
  • Christian liturgy is shaped by the metaphors for Jesus that have evolved through two thousand years of theological reflection. However, the metaphors of the first four centuries have dominated. These metaphors reflect patriarchal, priestly and platonic worldviews, which are being challenged in this post-modern era. These metaphors also fail to reflect the diverse imagery and thought of the Bible. Alternative metaphors are widely used in scholarship. Yet, worship, traditional or contemporary in style, continues to be shaped by these anachronistic and partial metaphors for Jesus. This project uses alternative metaphors for Jesus to deconstruct and re-imagine liturgy in a local congregation.
