Abstract
  • The modern hospice movement combines medical practice and compassionate care to provide reasonably comfortable, natural surroundings for dying persons during the last stage of their lives. The thesis of this project is that these principles can be applied to the lay pastoral care of an individual congregation and thus can provide a place to support both dying persons and their families. The project develops a prototype program and curriculum which provides training in medical, emotional and spiritual care, as well as counselor training. The curriculum was tested over an eight month period among eighty-one persons from thirteen congregations in Fresno, California. It resulted in the formation of three congregational hospice teams.
