- Abstract
- African-American Christians lack clarity about the rich evangelistic tradition known as 'telling the story,' and are therefore sometimes unmotivated to be witnesses to God's redemptive work in the world. This project tests the premise that an exploration of this tradition will enable laity to witness to their faith. A small study group of African-American Christians followed a curriculum based on Thomas R Groome's shared praxis model of Christian education, involving interaction with and response to Christian witness. The study allowed participants to: examine the content of the church's evangelistic witness; explore the experiences of slavery and freedom which have shaped the way African Americans relate the Christian story; and identify prospective means of evangelism in which laity could become active. At the conclusion of the study, participants expressed an understanding of the essential meaning of the gospel, increased understanding of the way African Americans have appropriated the Christian story, and renewed intent to serve as Christian witnesses.
