- This project proposes that a chaplain's denominational polity directly influences satisfaction with the army chaplaincy's accession and assignment processes. The project reviewed current literature and interviewed a corporate personnel director and chaplain assignment officers from the US Air Force and US Navy. The Army Chaplain School administered a questionnaire to Basic and Advanced students, and chaplain colonels completed a similar questionnaire at a senior chaplains' conference. Denominational polity is a critical factor, especially in the initial phases of a chaplain's career. The army's accession and assignment processes are 'closed,' as in an episcopal polity, but most chaplains come from denominations that are not 'closed.' Chaplains from 'open' clergy placement systems have less positive attitudes toward the army system. The project recommends specific training in accession and assignment processes to be incorporated in the Chaplain School curriculum.
