Abstract
  • A pastor entering into a new call seeks to discover the theological biography of a 100-year-old congregation by using a life cycle assessment by Martin F. Saarinen and its author's subsequent suggestion for revitalization. In so doing, she hopes to discover 1) the congregation's kairos moments, 2) implications for present and future ministries, and 3) how her ministerial gifts can best be used. The project necessarily explored the difference between 'chronos' history and 'kairos' history and the definition of 'testimony' and 'witness' in terms of Post-modern Christianity and 'exile' images. The congregation was interviewed and surveyed in both group and individual settings over a period of 2 1/2 years by both an interim pastor and the new pastor. The subjective data gathered was explored along with recurring themes from the pastor's journal. A panel of pastor peers reviewed the work and found it to be consistent with their knowledge of and work with this particular congregation.
