  • This historical-theological essay examines the ministry of oversight (episcope) in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Disciples episcope began in the office of 'evangelist' in the early decades of the movement, grew through the de facto assumption of episcope by the corresponding secretaries of the movement's 'state missionary societies,' and received constitutional status in the office of Regional Minister, created in the denomination's Restructure in 1969. One chapter examines continuities and discontinuities between Disciples ministry, especially regional ministry, and the threefold office of ministry defined in COCU documents and other ecumenical sources.
