Abstract
  • The Christian community shapes the sermons which are spoken to the community. Research for this thesis has focused on writings that develop the notion of the centrality of community, and especially how the concept of community has an impact on the process of preaching. The preacher is seen as one who is set in the midst of community, in contrast to one who is set apart from the community. The preacher speaks, not to the congregation, but for them, articulating their deepest faith affirmations. The preacher's authority is not hierarchical, but communal and relational.
