Abstract
  • The adaptive challenge facing American Mainline churches in the “new environment” of Post-Christendom will require congregations to mine ancient tradition, new scientific insights, and Spirit-ual imagination to design containers that can hold the basic ingredients of transformation: connection and disruption, both of which arise from personal encounter with God and others. For one such container, this paper explores the Eucharistic Meal, an adaptive re-integration of the symbolic Eucharistic ritual with shared communal meals, inspired by early Church gatherings. The paper synthesizes insights from the Gospel of Luke, early church practice, trauma theory, sacramental theology, and congregational “Breakfast Church” experiments.
