Abstract
  • This project was designed to develop the authentic identity of black youth in the local congregation of First Union Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. The model design consisted of three sermons with pre- and post-test surveys. This action research model involved the researcher's efforts to identify changes in attitudes of participants toward developing an authentic identity. The model shows that the participants sometime judge themselves according to the perceptions and standards of whites. By having a keen awareness of cultural heritage, self-esteen, and spirituality they can develop a sense of somebodiness.
