Abstract
  • This paper identifies the spirit of hospitality as the key to preaching in an evangelical voice among strangers. The author discusses how this spirit leads the preacher to open up her or his private world to the stranger. Sermon discussion groups, interviews, and journal writing were used to uncover what is helpful and what is not helpful when preaching among people who are not connected by common history or tradition, nor by ties of friendship of family. A significant finding in the study shows the connection between the stranger within the preacher and the stranger in the audience.
