Abstract

This project researches contemporary descriptions of campus ministry, assesses the religious needs of college students, especially commuters, evaluates two campus ministry programs and proposes a model for Manchester, New Hampshire. The project situates campus ministry in the current debate over the improvement of higher education. It draws on contemporary theology and the Roman Catholic Bishop's Pastoral Letter that calls for 'a new phase' in campus ministry. Part two defines campus ministry with a faith stance and with a mission to care for the academic world. It devotes one chapter to liturgy as pastoral care. Part three examines the context of ministry, especially ministry to commuters, in Manchester, New Hampshire. Part four evaluates campus ministry at St Ann Parish and Student Center, Boston, Massachusetts and at the Newman Center in Newark, New Jersey. The final section explores the possibilities for ministry in Manchester, New Hampshire and proposes a parish-based model with outreach to various campuses.
