Abstract
  • This project-thesis addresses the problem of liturgy and preaching on social-ethical issues which often become moralistic or judgmental in the name of being 'prophetic', leaving worshippers unchanged or angry. Such worship should take account of the way people develop morally and spiritually. The models of Lawrence Kohlberg in moral development and of James Fowler in faith development are examined and related to current concepts in Christian worship and social ethics. Five worship services and sermons were used to test developmental strategies on social-ethical themes. Worshippers answered questions concerning how they heard materials aimed to create empathy or dissatisfaction or to attract to a higher stage.
