  • In Presbyterian congregations members have diverse opinions on issues of public concern. Pastoral leadership involves cultivating a climate in which such opinions are explored openly with a biblical and theological parameters. Through increased intentional leadership, the pastor of First Presbyterian Church (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) hopes to cultivate diversity of opinion within the congregation so that people will accept diversity of opinion more readily and not feel estranged from one another or from the congregation. More intentional pastoral leadership will help prevent congregational disunity and prepare the way for future action in the community and larger church.
