  • In an attempt to address the ever-increasing number of persons who unite with United Methodist churches from other Christian traditions, and particularly St Mark Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, a post-baptismal catechumenate process was developed. Modifications were made each year for each group. There was a concern that the experience be more than a course on the history, polity, doctrine, or theology of Methodism. Instead of offering a class on information about Christ and Christianity, a process of Christian formation was sought. Mutual accountability of the covenant group was combined with instruction on the acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion, in the atmosphere of faith sharing-telling the stories of our faith. Participants wrote a group covenant, met for 18 weeks for sharing, prayer, and instruction, and used the Sunday Lectionary for daily prayer, meditation, and preparation for Christian living. The covenant was sealed with a service of consecration called a Celebration of New Beginnings in Faith.
